How to test AI teammates without losing control of your one-person business

Run a short, approval-gated trial that measures hours saved and margin protected before you let any AI teammate do real work.

Treat AI teammates as a bounded, approval-gated trial that must save measurable hours and protect margin. Do not let them become a default replacement for hiring or ownership.

A solo business has no board, no spare manager, and no extra pair of eyes. You are the only manager, the only approver, and the only person who can say no. The control problem is whether you can stop it before it spends, sends, or publishes something you would not have approved.

Hancom, the maker of Nomadian, ships a platform with twelve AI teammates across sales, marketing, support, contracts, and recruiting. Its team-leader agent, Ara, takes your instructions, assigns work to the other teammates, and reviews what they produce. That sounds like a small office, but for a solo operator it is also a new set of permissions.

The company's initial US target is 5.21 million solo or sub-10-employee businesses already using or paying for AI, drawn from about 31.99 million US businesses that operated without paid employees in the prior year. The market is large enough that the real question is whether you can keep them inside a boundary you can afford.

The company plans to unveil Nomadian on Nov. 17 at Amazon's Seattle headquarters, start a US private beta on Dec. 15, and open worldwide, including Korea, in March 2027. If you are deciding now, build the trial rules before you pay for anything.

The standard subscription may run near $40 a month, with possible early-user discounts above 50 percent. It is a small number next to a salary, but it is not a free number. If the tool saves you some hours a week, the bill may be worth it. If it saves you some minutes and creates review work, it is a cost.

The trial has to be small enough to survive

Let low-risk, reversible AI work proceed inside a pre-set authority boundary, then add checks when the action is irreversible, unusual, or high-consequence. Oversight should rise with the financial or operational stakes, whether the action is a $400 purchase or a $4 million procurement order.

Document every automated agent action in a business process and tie it to a named human owner, because final accountability for even small automated actions must remain with a person. Oversight is a cost that cannot be scaled away because human time has fixed capacity, and an unqualified approver can become a formality.

The checks that keep a trial honest

The checklist is short because the trial has to be short. Each item is a gate you can test quickly, and each one protects a different part of the business.

  • Name the task and confirm it repeats, is low-consequence, and can be undone.
  • Turn on approval gates for sending, publishing, and paying.
  • Read the data-use policy and confirm your work is not used to train models.
  • Record hours saved and compare the bill to the value of those hours; cancel if the bill is higher.

The task item keeps the scope narrow. The approval item limits the damage. The data item protects your work from becoming someone else's training data. The ledger item turns the whole experiment into a number you can defend.

A solo operator has no backup reviewer. If the tool makes a mistake, you are the one who answers for it. The gates are the only way to keep the trial from becoming a liability.

The ledger decides whether the teammate stays

Among the customers he has seen, most start with modest AI deployments and scale up only as confidence builds, keeping manual steps around. That is the right posture for a solo founder: borrow capacity for a defined job, not a whole department.

Keep a simple ledger for the trial. Note the hours the AI teammate saves, the hours you spend reviewing it, and the bill. If the bill is higher than the value of the hours saved, cancel. If the bill is lower, keep the task and watch the next one.

Do not let a useful draft become a standing permission. The AI teammate can help you move faster, but the business still has a single owner. Review the ledger before you add another task.
