Let AI build automations without one bad workflow eating margin
AI can draft the workflow; the durable trick is a review gate, cost controls, and a pre-production checklist.

The durable trick is a gate, not speed
You ask an AI builder to automate refunds, and it hands back a workflow that can run while you sleep. The danger is a bad node touching invoices, customers, or refunds before you notice. For a solo operator, the margin you protect is usually the hours you would spend cleaning up a mistake.
n8n Assistant can take a plain-language automation request and plan, build, run, and debug a workflow. It is useful. A generated build still needs a human review gate before it touches real money or real customers.
Conversations persist across restarts, and an interrupted run can be resumed instead of losing all but the first message. That helps you iterate. It does not remove the need to check what was actually built.
A generated workflow is a draft. The gate is small: look for the node that changes state, the log that proves failure was handled, and the credential that can do less than it should. Speed is not the point. Keep the first run from becoming the cleanup week.
Cost controls belong in the same gate
Money can leak in the workflow and in the AI bill. A retry loop, a duplicate send, or a node that calls an expensive model on every trigger can all eat margin. The AI bill can look like a small line item until it is not. The review gate should catch a bad bill before the first customer sees it.
n8n Cloud Gateway credits are a prepaid balance for running AI models such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini without a provider account or pasted API key. Keep that balance separate from your own provider bills. A prepaid cap is easier to watch than an open tab.
Starting with n8n 2.35, a one-line Docker install configures the code sandbox and web search and enables n8n Assistant by default. For self-hosters, that convenience is worth noting. The default path can also include features you have not yet audited.
n8n is source-available and self-hostable, allowing users to inspect code and avoid per-execution fees. That matters for margin. You are not only paying for AI calls; you are paying for the time it takes to trust the system.
TrueFoundry AI Gateway centralizes policy, spending limits, routing, and logging for n8n LLM calls. It is intended to give finance teams predictable spend and security teams clean audit trails for n8n LLM traffic. For a solo operator, the useful idea is simpler: keep the model bill visible, and make the limit obvious before the first run.
n8n offers human-in-the-loop, guardrails, and evaluations as platform controls. Use them for customer-facing workflows, and use them deliberately when money is involved.
Run the gate before the workflow goes live
Use this before the workflow goes live. Each item should be quick if your notes are clean. If an item takes longer, stop and fix the process, not the symptom. The checklist is a pre-production gate, kept short on purpose.
- Confirm preview status. n8n Assistant remains a preview feature in n8n. A feature listed in n8n release notes may not yet be available to a given instance because it can be gated behind a flag or rolled out gradually.
- Check the generated workflow and its run records before trusting the first result. Scan for send, charge, delete, or publish actions, and confirm a successful test and a handled failure.
- Verify credentials and cost routing. For HTTP Request nodes that target services without a dedicated n8n credential type, n8n Assistant pre-fills a credential form and checks the key against the service's API before saving it. Confirm that validation happened, set a visible limit on the AI balance, and make the routing visible.
- Test in a sandbox with fake data.
- Monitor first runs, with human-in-the-loop or guardrails enabled, and note any behavior you did not intend.
- Separate AI credits from Gateway credits, and keep the balance visible.
Ongoing adversarial testing is recommended for safety-critical AI deployments. Five of six widely available LLMs provided information sufficient to answer a harmful query in fewer than 2 conversation turns in at least one test scenario. You do not need a red team for a solo business. Write down a bad action you tried and the guardrail that stopped it.
