One-Hour Shopify Thank-You Tracking Checklist
A solo operator can audit, replace, and test post-purchase conversion tags in about an hour, before a platform upgrade quietly erases them.

If you run paid ads on a non-Plus Shopify store, the additional scripts field on your Thank you and Order status pages probably held Google Ads tags, Meta pixels, GTM containers, affiliate scripts, surveys, and tracking widgets. On August 26, 2026, Shopify swapped those pages automatically for stores that had not finished the upgrade. The legacy additional scripts box stopped running permanently after that swap. When the field stops firing, checkout stays quiet, with no error or 500, and the first sign can be a softer conversion column in an ad platform weeks later.
The failure is silent, so the test is the alarm
After the August 26, 2026 cutoff, Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, GA4/GTM, and other affiliate tags that lived in Additional Scripts stopped firing with no error message or warning banner. Once the upgrade is complete, the automatic page swap cannot be reverted, and the additional scripts field cannot be turned back on to recover the previous code. A narrow exception existed for stores created before January 6, 2025: they could revert to the old pages only if they had pre-existing additional-script or script-tag customizations and had done a manual upgrade fewer than 30 days before the deadline. The reliable alarm is a real order plus a check of ad-platform events.
Every post-purchase script is a named dependency
Shopify's replacement path is pixel-based: start with an app pixel, and build a custom pixel only if no app meets the need. For code that lived on the Order status page, the supported path is a web pixel or a customer account UI extension. Name the dependency, choose the replacement, and prove it with a real order.
The checklist keeps the dependency map honest
Work through this list, then repeat it after any app change. Start with the inventory, since a missing tag is easier to replace when you know its name. Replace the conversion tags first; those are the ones that can quietly soften the conversion column. Run the test order last, since a clean dashboard is not proof.
- Open the Shopify upgrade report and mark every additional script and app customization on the two post-purchase pages.
- Match each Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, GA4/GTM, or affiliate tag to an app pixel replacement.
- Reserve a custom pixel for the case where no app meets the need.
- Give order-tracking or survey code a customer account UI extension or web pixel path.
- Make sure the replacement covers the order status page, not only the Thank you page.
- Place a real order and check the ad platform for the conversion event.
- Refund the test order after the event appears.
- Record each tag as live, replaced, or dead.
The report item catches scripts the upgrade can leave behind without a visible error. Pixel-based replacement drives the app-pixel items, with custom pixels as the fallback. Post-purchase code can live on more than one page, so the order-status item matters. A dashboard can look normal while the conversion event is missing, so the real-order item is the proof.
A dead tag is a replacement decision
If a tag is dead, do not paste the old code into a new box and hope. Ask whether an app pixel can carry the event. Only when no app meets the need should you build a custom pixel. For order status page features, check whether a customer account UI extension is the cleaner path. A test order tells you whether the replacement actually fired. The decision is small, but it protects the hours you already spent on ads.
When you add a new app, add its replacement path to the same map. Then the next platform change becomes a lookup, not a mystery. Keep the silent-failure list beside your ad account and your app list for now. It is the margin you keep when the platform changes again.
